Motorcycle accident fatalities in America

Thankfully, the general trend when it comes to auto accident fatalities in the U.S. over the past couple of decades has been a decrease in such deaths. Between 1997 and 2013, there was a 66 percent drop in the per-passenger-vehicle fatality rate in the country.

Unfortunately, not all motor vehicle fatalities have been experiencing this positive of a trend over this time period. Take motorcyclist fatalities for example. The per-registered-vehicle motorcyclist fatality rate in the U.S. in 2013 was not much different from the rate in 1997, and the annual total of motorcyclist deaths in the U.S. only experienced two year-to-year decreases between 1997 and 2013.

Why do you think there hasn't be the same sort of progress in reducing motorcyclist fatalities as there has been with reducing other types of motor vehicle fatalities in the past couple of decades?

Encouragingly, drops in motorcyclist fatalities seem to be becoming a little more common as of recent. One of the two year-to-year drops in nationwide motorcyclist deaths between 1997 and 2013 occurred in 2013. And some recent projections by the Governors Highway Safety Association indicate that 2014 may have also seen a year-to-year drop in such deaths. The projections put the 2014 total for motorcyclist deaths at 4,584. The 2013 motorcyclist fatality total was 4,668. Thus, it is possible that the country saw twice as many year-to-year drops in motorcyclist deaths from 2013 to 2014 as it did in the entirety of the period from 1997 to 2012.

Some postulate that the recent motorcyclist fatality drops are the result of economic/weather trends rather than safety trends. Why do you think there have been drops in motorcyclist deaths in the U.S. recently?

Just as is the case with other fatal motor vehicle accidents, families of the victims of fatal motorcycle accidents may be able to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit if a party other than their love one was negligent in connection to the accident that killed their loved one. Attorneys can help families of individuals who were killed in motorcycle accidents determine if a wrongful death lawsuit is among the legal options available to them.
